Poole Twin Sails Bridge
Designed by London-based architects Wilkinson Eyre, the ‘Twin Sails’ is Poole’s second ‘opening’ bridge and spans Backwater Channel linking the town centre with Hamworthy.

The bridge comprises of two triangular lifting sections – designed to mirror the sails of passing yachts – which when raised, permit the passage of shipping through the Backwater Channel. The operation will be performed around 15 times a day.

Commissioned as project partner to HOCHTIEF (UK) Ltd, IES provided the complete electrical scope including the delivery of all automation, switchgear, power distribution, architectural lighting and site installation.

Utilising the latest technology a safe SIL3 rated control system is used with remote operation from the Poole council offices two miles away.

Construction and installation was completed in early 2012.
